Scenery

Today I started work on a new cereal box building. I was debating whether or not to use styrene but decided that I was too lazy to go out to the hobby shop and cardboard would work just as fine since I wasn't making the buildings super detailed at this point anyway.

I had previously added some scenery to the area surrounding the crossing. So far it consists of a signal tower and some ground cover.

I also began to work on ballasting the track today. I focused around the yard area and touching the ballast by the freight depot. I found it was best to do it in two passes. The first is light and just covers the roadbed and between the rails. The second coat bring the level up to the ties along the outside and builds up the grade from the roadbed to the ground level.

Buildings

It has been a while since my last post, but the blocks have all been wired and buildings have sprung up as well.

Most of the buildings, with the exception of the small freight depot, were scratch build from cereal boxes. A few of the more detailed ones, like the signal tower have been glued to the layout, the other are held in place with pins. This way I can take them off and add more detail to them later.
